Bierocks, also known as Runza sandwiches, are a traditional German-Russian food that is popular in the Midwest United States. They consist of a yeast dough that is filled with a mixture of ground beef, onion, and cabbage and then baked. They are often served as a sandwich or as a side dish.
Here is a recipe for Bierocks:
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of flour
- 1/4 cup of sugar
- 1/4 cup of vegetable oil
- 1/4 cup of milk
- 1 package of active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup of warm water
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp of salt
- 1 lb of ground beef
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 cup of shredded cabbage
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Mix flour, sugar, vegetable oil, and milk in a large mixing bowl.
- Mix the yeast, warm water, and sugar in a separate bowl. Let sit for 5 minutes.
- Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and stir until well combined.
- Knead the dough for about 5 minutes.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour.
- In a skillet, brown the ground beef, onion, and cabbage. Season with salt and pepper. Drain off any excess fat.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Roll out the dough into a large rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
- Place the beef mixture in the center of the dough.
- Fold the dough over the filling and seal the edges.
- Place the bierocks on a greased baking sheet.
- Beat the egg and brush it on top of the bierocks.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
